Head of Department - Mrs M Pellon, M.A.
The Modern Languages Department is committed to the communicative approach to MFL teaching. On entry to Year 7, pupils study French and Spanish. They are then given the opportunity to choose between French and Spanish at the end of Year 7. They specialise in their chosen language from Year 8 onwards and take it to GCSE. Pupils are taught in groups according to their ability. Activities linked to the curriculum are offered regularly, whether day visits, residential trips or in-school events. Latin lessons are taught as an extra-curricular option to selected pupils in Years 8, 9 & 10 with a scope to take it at GCSE. A visit to Italy takes place every third year.
In the Sixth Form there are long-established Advanced Level courses in French and German (with Spanish being introduced once take-up allows). Pupils whose interests lie primarily in other subjects may continue their studies by following an AS course. Pupils are encouraged to visit the Target Language country in order to develop their language skills further and are encouraged to participate in European work experience in Year 13. There are numerous clubs on offer to pupils to allow pupils to be exposed to European languages and cultures other than the ones offered in the curriculum.
