Head of Department - Miss J Gidman, M.A.
The Geography Department has continued to thrive this year, with over 200 pupils successfully completing their GCSEs. The results reflecting the dedication and hard work of our Year 11 students. We are also delighted to see that more pupils are choosing to continue their geographical studies at A Level. Our Year 13 cohort also achieved strong outcomes, demonstrating resilience and independence through their Independent Investigations.
Throughout their time studying Geography at The Heathland School, students have developed a wide range of lifelong skills, from critical thinking to data analysis and fieldwork techniques.
Fieldwork remains at the heart of our Geography curriculum, helping students connect classroom learning to the real world. This year, we’ve offered a variety of exciting trips and hands-on experiences:
· Year 7 pupils completed microclimate fieldwork around the school grounds and some visited the Living Rainforest to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of tropical ecosystems.
· Year 8 carried out an investigation into the sustainability of The Heathland School.
· Year 9 explored infiltration rates and around 45 students took part in an Urban Challenge trip to Oxford.
· Year 10 visited Seaford for coastal fieldwork, while Year 11 collected vital data in Slough and Windsor to support their GCSE studies.
These experiences have greatly enriched our students’ geographical understanding of the world around them.
Looking ahead, we are excited to run the Antarctica Flag Competition in November. The winning flag will be sent to Antarctica and is expected to arrive early next year, this is a unique opportunity to connect our students with global geography in actio
