Most Able School Trip to the University of Oxford

The Heathland School Sixth Form provides a rich and challenging programme of support for our most able students, helping them to fulfil their academic potential and prepare confidently for competitive university courses and degree apprenticeships.

Students are identified through their GCSE results and receive regular check-ins with the Most Able Coordinator, who supports them in developing a strong super-curricular portfolio, and signposts them to explore their academic interests beyond the taught curriculum.

Students benefit from a programme of external speakers who share their expertise and provide insight into a wide range of post-18 pathways, including university study and degree apprenticeships. Our students also have the opportunity to visit Somerville College, University of Oxford, where they experience the collegiate environment and gain a greater understanding of the Oxbridge application process and academic expectations.

Weekly subject-specific mentoring is provided in Humanities, Medicine/Dentistry/Veterinary Science, Mathematics, and Engineering. These sessions develop students’ critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills, while also encouraging them to articulate and defend their opinions with confidence. Alongside this academic enrichment, students receive individual support with personal statements and take part in small-group interview practice, helping them to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in competitive applications and their chosen pathways beyond Sixth Form.

Students who receive offers from Oxbridge or for Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science also benefit from a dedicated Mock Interview Day. This provides students with the opportunity to build confidence and develop technique through realistic interview scenarios, and the receiving of expert feedback in a supportive environment.

2025/26 students presented awards at The Senior Prizegiving Ceremony by Amia Tahir, a Heathland Alum.
